A former Montebello police detective, who was fired for not taking the COVID-19 vaccine as mandated by the city, has sued the city for wrongful termination and alleged gender discrimination. Maria Chavez filed her lawsuit on Wednesday, Nov. 23, accusing the city of discriminating against women, including denying promotions after she refused to take the vaccine. 'During her career with the MPD, Chavez experienced discrimination in many forms,' Chavez's attorney Ryan Mahoney wrote in the lawsuit. 'In short, the MPD detective unit was a private men's club, and women were not welcome.
